working hypothesis

with the topic i chose, "dont ask, dont tell", i hypothesize that ethos is used in the articles i have found online; pathos is used to make you either for or against gays in the military; and logos is used by conitnually adding the military's opinions. with these statements, im forming my arguement that i am for the "dont ask, dont tell" issue in our society today.

screening questions for topics

The Myth of College as a Fairytale
1.yes. ive always been told college is "so fun" when really its alot of hard work
2.yes. same as number one.
3.it might be hard to find material on this subject, but i would look for many articles.
4. yes. i know college isnt all fun & games.

Where "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Remains
1.yes. i am both for and against gays, lesbians, bisexual, and transgenders, so i could write alot about this topic.
2. i wouldn't have a firm opinion, since im on both sides.
3.there would be alot of material that talks about this subject.
4.yes. if you want to fight for our country, it shouldnt matter who you are.

I would lean more towards the first topic i chose. I have a firm opinion on it and would enjoy writing about it. BUT-im going to go with the second topic, because i can find more info! (:

research freewrite

I'm still not for sure of what I want to research and write about. There are so many different topics to choose from. I plan to examaine and explain my topic and hypothesis thoroughly so others will understand it very clearly.
When I choose a topic, I plan to use many different sources. I will try to fnd websites, commercials, books, and older documents to help me with my paper.
Right now, the hardest problem for me is finding a topic I WANT to write about. Also, finding reliable information to back up my statements.

"Thw World's Local Bank"

From Cassinelli, I learned alot more about globalization than I wanted to. Personally, I never knew it was a problem. After reading this, I actually want to know more about what's going on today. Cassinelli has a very strong introduction. He says "Globalization is undoubtedly one of the defining phenomena of our time." By saying this, he's not beating around the bush about what he is getting ready to infrom the audience about. He flat out says globalization is a major problem. The structure of this article is very well also. When Cassinelli transitions to his next paragraphs, he is very smooth and understandable. The content in this article is, once again, very good. He describes what he's talking about and tried to see other peoples opinion and how they might see an image, ad or commercial. Overall, this article was very clear and easy to understand.

"more than just dolls"

My reaction to "more than dolls" webpage is probably like everyone elses. No one is perfect and no one is going to look like barbie or GI JOE. Little innocent girls shouldn't be thinking that thats the only way they're going to be beautiful and thats how every single girl must look. Also, young boy toddlers shouldn't be raised thinking that they must have muscles to be attractive. Then again, being overweight is unhealthy, therefore I believe thats why they only make "skinny" dolls and action figures.

Ads everywhere today are about diet pills and loosing weight. I'm not against being healthy and working out, but I am against anorexic highschool and middleschoolers. If you're overweight and WANT to be on a diet, go for it. But if you only weigh 105 lbs, don't start taking diet pills to be a double digit rather than a triple digit.

In seventeen magazines, they always have a "fitness" section. http://www.seventeen.com/video/?c=HealthandFitness This website shows how to work out, not how to loose alot of weight. Today, body image is still an issue and will always be for insecure people. As i said above about diet ads everywhere, I believe thats the main reason for self-esteem issues.

comparing colleges

OUC is a very friendly, welcoming environment. Here you can relax outside on our beautiful small campus and expand your knowledge in our rooms. You can also express yourself in our theatre and art rooms.

MSC is a homey, fun-filled place to be. We have seasonal parties, many sports, and a pool for our dorms. Here, you will never forget your well earned education.

The pictures on both of these college websites seem to be about being yourself and having fun in college while gaining your degree. At OUC, it shows pictures of the campus, people learning, art classes, and drama club. On the other hand, MSC shows pictures of cheerleaders, the monster bash party coming up, the pool at the dorms, and the new building on campus. OUC is more about learning while MSC is about having fun.

logos

We chose this picture to represnt logos. This ad shows that this bed is so comfortable, that you will sleep like a baby.

negative point of view

A chilling breeze moves the dead leaves on the trees as I sit outside the Bennet Hall. People are doing many different things such as killing their lungs & insides with their five minute cigarrette, frantically getting into their long waiting cars, quickly walking to class, boringly sitting on the steps at the Stevenson Center, and jogging because it's another form of excersie. The blinding sunshine is reflecting off of the cars in the parking lot and cars pulling in with their music blaring. Looking at every suspicious person, the security gaurd walks towards the empty amplitheater waiting to catch someone breaking the rules. You can barely hear people talking over the  extremely loud air conditioning unit. If you look at the ground, you can see the ants fighting over food but if you look up you'll see the broken, useless spider webs hanging off trees. The houses seem unwelcoming with their fenced in trampolines and swingsets in their backyards. Cautionary objects are in place but not used; stop sign on the road and fire extinguisher by the tree. One last thing you will never miss, our untaken care of American flag on the pole.

positive point of view

A light breeze moves the color-turning leaves on the trees as I sit outside the Bennet Hall. People are doing many different things such as enjoying their five minute cigarrette, getting into their patiently waiting cars, smoothly walking to class, relaxing on the steps at the Stevenson Center, and jogging to feel the cool breeze. The warm sunshine is reflecting off of the cars in the parking lot and cars pulling in with their music flowing through the air. Minding his own business, the security gaurd walks towards the empty amplitheater with a small smile on his face. You can hear the faintest of chatter over the air conditioning unit. If you look at the ground, you can see the ants excitingly move around but if you look up you'll see the carefree spider webs drifting in the wind. The houses seem so cozy with their trampolines and swingsets in their backyards. Cautionary objects are in place; stop sign on the road and fire extinguisher by the tree. One last thing you will never miss, our American flag, blowing in the breeze.
